In our previous discussion, we have tried to define what living in the power of the Spirit entails. Now recall our scriptural text, Roman 8:13 that says “for if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.” We have established that it is imperative for a man to have the Holy Spirit before he can have life.  The life comes from God.  The Spirit gives life and God gives the Spirit. God is Spirit. Those who have God in them have the Spirit. When you don’t have the Spirit you can’t have the life of God. It is by the Spirit that the deeds of the body can be mortified. No human efforts can do it.

God’s desire is that man should be the embodiment of His nature through the indwelling of His Spirit.  Recall that Adam did not become a living being until God breathed life into Him. The breath of God is His Spirit. He gives eternal life; and by Him man gains the divine nature. However this was lost following the fall of man in the Garden of Eden.

Yet, by God’s love He planned restoration. Man was redeemed through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. By that those who accept Him are quickened (made alive again). The scripture says; “and you hath He quickened, who were dead in trespass and sin”(Eph 2:1). In essence the old Adamic nature by which man became slave to sin, and death came upon him, is overcome in Christ.  This much we have established. Now with the new nature a believer lives in the power of the Holy Spirit. He becomes a new creature, with new nature, new character, new attitude, new thinking, and new living being; for he has the Holy Spirit dwelling in Him. Thus, it is expected of those who are born again by the Spirit of God to live in the power of that Spirit, and become the beneficiary of His tremendous benefits.

Such benefits are what unbelievers and those who continue to deny Christ as Lord are missing. First living in the power of the Spirit prevents us from walking in the flesh and grants us freedom from condemnation. “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit”. (Rom 8: 1).

Although the flesh often may want to control and dictate to man, the power of the Spirit will help to tame the flesh. The Spirit has overriding power over the flesh. He will prevent us from walking in the flesh, because the Spirit always pleases the Father. Those who are in the Spirit are not subject to the dictate of the flesh. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you” Rom 8:9).  Yielding to the flesh bring man on a wrong course with the Spirit, hence man becomes condemned. The flesh is carnal, and cannot please God..

A condemned man is someone who has been found guilty of an offence; most especially a grievous crime. Man had been condemned to death the very moment the first parents transgressed by eating of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.  “ And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”  (Gen 2:16-17NKJV). Going against that commandment automatically brought death upon man.

Ever since the scripture notes the ways of man are evil all the time. He who lives in sin has come short of the glory of God. The bible says the wages of sin is death. A sinner is qualified to die. Anyone who sins is of the devil; the love of the father is not in Him, because he is doing contrary to the will of God.

The devil sinneth from the beginning; he is the father of sin. When you engage or indulge in wickedness you are not doing the will of God. In God there is no wickedness. Our God is a righteous and holy God. That is why He wants us to be like Him; not like the devil. When you repent of your sin and come to Jesus, He would receive you; then you can scale over the condemnation. When you accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour and Lord, the Lord justifies you and impute His righteousness unto you through His grace you are saved from the repercussion of you old life and old nature. A justified criminal is totally free indeed. Christ by His death and resurrection justified everyone who believes in Him, from the curse of law; in that when we were yet sinners He died for us.

The condemnation that ought to be our portion, he had borne it for us, submitting Himself to the scorn and shame of the cross, for your sake and for my sake. “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” (Gal 3:13 KJV). Because of His finished work of redemption there is no condemnation again for as many as believe in His name. They are those who are beneficiaries of the benefits of living in the power of His Spirit.

Also, those who live in the power of the Spirit enjoy freedom from the law of sin and death. The law condemns, it doesn’t save. Through law came condemnation. As a believer that has the Spirit of God, you are free from the law of condemnation, and are brought under the law of grace. You operate under “the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.”(Rom 8:2). That comes by the grace of God not work that any should boast (by His grace are ye saved).

This grace transforms a believer into the Kingdom of the dear son of God, where sin and death have no place. What you gain freedom from or over, you become master over. Because you have the Spirit of Life, death has no dominion over you anymore. Sin too cannot rule over you again. Unfortunately in the world today, many Christians are not even drawing these benefits: they still live in fear and subject themselves to bondage of sin and death, because they fail to mortify their bodies. There are so many men and women that live in perpetual fear; they are usually afraid of what happens to them and their children. Some rarely sleep well out of fear of death. Others are under the control of sin, by implication the control of satan. Whatever you submit your life to controls your life. Those who live in sin are slave to sin.

But you can be free too. There is freedom in Christ through His Spirit. You can be saved from the prison of sin and fear of death brought about by the curse of law. Are you a victim who has been running here and there looking for solution but to no avail? Looking for how to be saved? Know this today “there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved”(Acts 4:12). That is the name of Jesus Christ. You are invited to confess that name today, accept Him as your savior and Lord and you will have peace.
